Jakarta's Fourth Batch

Updated: Jul 29, 2020

Date: Sunday, 28 June 2020

Distribution area: Cilincing and Rumah Lansia Atmabrata

Sunday, 28th June of 2020, we were cooking our fourth batch to donate 120 meals to the Cilincing area and Rumah Lansia Atmabrata, a nursing home. This was our second time donating to this area, our first being the batch before this one. This time I was in charge of the rice instead of chicken which I had done for the last three batches. Rice is not that hard to make, and compared to making the chicken much less dangerous. With no fire and frying to deal with, rice is a staple food that many people consider a necessity to their meals. However at home, I only had one small rice cooker. Cooking 9kg of rice at once definitely needed more than just that. Borrowing rice cookers from neighbours, I gathered an array of different rice cookers to be able to cook all the rice in time to be sent to Caitlyn’s house to be packaged.

Waking up much earlier than I usually do, which is what happens during these cooking Sundays, I got to work washing the rice. Surprisingly, this took longer than expected since I had to rinse each portion of rice for each rice cooker a few times. Once all the rice was clean and ready, I was able to then put the rice into the rice cooker and add in the water for the rice to be cooked. While the rice was in the cookers, I started to wash the next batches of rice so that as soon as the rice was finished being cooked, I would be able to immediately insert the next batch. The process continued until finally all the rice was cooked and then wrapped in the containers to be sent to Caitlyn’s house.

Here are the packaged meals to be sent!

Despite being unable to go to Caitlyn’s house to package the meals and bring them to Cilincing, I sincerely hope that I will be able to one day —and continue donating these meals to those who need them. Covid-19 hinders many events and has caused irrevocable change throughout many peoples lives. Seeing the photos of the living conditions of these people who deserve so much more gives me the motivation to cook more and more meals for them. Through YOUR donations we at Food for the Heart can help the community. Thank you to everyone who has donated and contributed to this organization! We are truly grateful that we are given the means to lend a hand, no matter how small and we cannot wait to keep doing so.
